Paarl: - Day two of the SAWCA Inter Provincial produced some good individual performances but once again the matches emphasized the need for the bowlers to tighten up on their lines. A total of 472 extras having been conceded in the six matches played.
Boland (110) managed to beat Border (109) by one run in a game that saw Border give away 46 extras to lose by the narrowest of margins. Gauteng (199/8) saw themselves in a similar position winning by one run against North West (198) who somehow saw 5 of their batsmen run out in an attempt to get the winning runs. Gauteng's Hilda Nienaber made 52* and S Viljoen (60) top scored for North West.
Eastern Province (235/3), with the help of E Webber (65) and S Pillay (53*), knocked up the highest total of the day against Griqualand West. The highest score on the card however was Extras with 81. Zita Meyer was the most successful Griqualand bowler taking all 3 wickets to fall for 42 runs.
Western Province bowlers B Dermota (4/41) and J Barnard (4/8) were too good for the Easterns batsmen except for D van der Berg who top scored with 47*. easterns going down by four wickets.
Northerns whose batting powers have not as yet been tested had another comfortable win, this time against Free State. Y van der Merwe ran through the Free State batsmen ending up with 5/13 as Free State crumbled to 67 all out. Northerns ended up knocking the runs off without the loss of a wicket recording their second convincing win of the week.
Results:
Northerns (68/0) beat Free State (67) by ten wickets.
Gauteng (199/8) beat North West (198) by one run.
Western Province (144/6) beat Easterns (142/9) by four wickets.
Eastern Province (235/3) beat Griqualand West (93) by 142 runs.
Western Province 'B' (151/9) beat KwaZulu-Natal (137) by 14 runs.
Boland (110) beat Border (109) by one run.
